They say shampooing your hair everyday causes hairfall, did you know this was just a myth? This, and many other commonly believed myths were clarified by Dr Jaishree Sharad, in a two-hour hair-care seminar organised by

| Dr Jaishree Sharad talks about maintaining healthy hair |
Dr Sharad, secretary of the Cosmetic Dermatology Society of India and an eminent cosmetic dermatologist, started off by explaining the constituents and composition of hair.
To maintain hair, first and foremost, a proper diet has to be followed. In case of hair fall, supplements are required to be taken. “A proper dose of proteins, zinc, iron, vitamin A, B complex, biotin, vitamin B5, copper and calcium has to be taken,” she said.
Even the way we comb our hair, affects the well-being of the hair. Many of us believe that blood circulation is induced with more combing of hair. This is another myth, according to Dr Sharad. “In fact, prolonged brushing harms hair. Also, the right kind of brush should be used, one with wide bristles. All combs should be washed thrice a week in hot water,” she informed.
The scalp secretes sebum everyday, which makes it oily, attracts dust and grime. That is why hair has to be cleaned atleast twice a week or more, depending on the hair type. “Hair should be washed with warm water first as it opens the cuticles of the hair, after which, the shampoo penetrates and cleanses from within. In the end, hair should be again washed with cold water, so that the cuticles get closed,” she added.
Dr Sharad also explained the kinds of shampoos and conditioners to be used as per the hair type. Some natural conditioners are lemon juice, lime, curd, egg and vinegar.
UV rays, chemical pollutants, smoking, alcohol, physical and mental stres s, inadequate sleep, poor nutrition and inadequate sleep can be potential dangers to hair that can be easily avoided.
Says Rekha Sankhala, a housewife from the NRI Complex, “The seminar was informative. I have two girls, and one has a dandruff problem, so it has really helped me. It is great that we have seminars like these in Vashi.”
Nidhi Ahuja, a class eight student from Father Agnel School and the youngest to attend the seminar, said, “I attended the seminar because I have a graying hair problem in my family. I want to prevent it from early on, and this seminar really proved to be helpful.”
According to Dr Sharad, “Before going for swimming, you should apply conditioner and wash it off once you are done, so that the chlorine in the water doesn’t harm your hair.”
She concluded, “The response was good. The questions asked by the attendees were relevant. People do not know what to buy for their hair type.”
