The mangalsutra, apart from being a symbol of marriage has become a style statement thanks to Bollywood and TV stars.

With more and more women opting for western formals at the workplace, the mangalsutra too is keeping up with the trend. Says Archana Sarang, an advertising executive from Cuffe Parade, “I would look funny when I wore a mangalsutra with a suit.

I would only feel comfortable wearing it with Indian outfits. Now with the diamond ones, I feel more comfortable and wear it with jeans as well.”

Mangalsutras have become shorter in length. Says Rhea Nasta, jewellery designer, Popley and Sons, Opera House, “The mangalsutra, which was traditionally 22-24 inches long has shortened to 18-20 inches, so that it can rest on the neck instead of the waist.

Also instead of the traditional two strings, one string is used with more gold beads and less black ones. The pendants of the mangalsutra which were traditionally gold, have now been replaced by diamond ones.”

Mangalsutras are now being designed keeping the traditional black beads in mind. Adds Nasta, “We mix traditional and modern elements and that’s what appeals to young women.” It’s a great combination indeed!
