Volunteers of AGNI met at Balvikas hall on Sunday, March 22, to discuss the various election-related issues. This NGO is working towards creating awareness among the masses on the importance of casting a vote. In the words of Rajkumar Sharma, “This year the problems have magnified owing to the changes in the constituencies.

Six MLA wards now comprise one MP ward called South Central. Earlier the same was known as North East.”
Elaborating further on the geographical areas he added, “Chembur and Anushaktinagar areas along with Sion-Koliwada, Mahim and Dharavi now come under one MP ward, previously Chembur was along with other eastern suburbs like Vikhroli and Mulund.

Certain areas in Chembur like Pestomsagar and Tilaknagar are no longer in our ward.” Sanjay Khokane, another AGNI member added, “We are holding a ‘meet your candidate’ event on April 19, to acquaint the citizens on the candidates who are contesting the elections.”

“Pestomsagar and Tilaknagar have been added in Mumbai North Central, along with Bandra while Cheddanagar falls under South Central along with Chembur. Indianoil nagar, Prem Jyot complex along with Ghatkopar fall under North East,” states Rajkumar Sharma, AGNI co-ordinator.

AGNI members from other suburbs like Gurang Vora residing in Sion and Nikhil Desai from Wadala also attended the meet. “There are several local issues which an MP can solve so citizens must be aware and vote for the right candidate,” stated Sanjay.

AGNI is also striving to bring about changes in the protest vote. Elaborating further on this Sharma, added, “Prior to the electronic voting system citizens could cast their protest vote by marking a big cross on the ballot paper. There is no button for casting a protest vote in the electronic machine. A voter has to fill in a special form which defeats the purpose of secret ballot.”
