A water pipeline laying ceremony was held at Siddharth Colony, Chembur by ward no 146 BMC councillor Prakash Phaterpekar and residents of the area comprising of Postal Colony, Acharya Nagar, and Swastik Park including Siddharth Colony.
The water pipe line will begin from Tembe Bridge passing through Shell Colony, Siddharth Colony, Acharya Nagar and Swastik Park till Suman Nagar. Since the year 2000, the residents were facing a severe water crunch as the pipeline laying work could not be carried on owing to some mega project passing through the nearby highway.
The total project cost is 4 crore which is fully funded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Says Prakash Phaterpekar, “Since the year 2000 there was a mega block in this area due to widening of a drainage line and construction of the highway bridge by BMC and MMRDA. So a pipeline could not be laid properly. Residents were facing a serious water crisis. This project will be a boon for them.”
He further added, “For the last one year I have been trying to get this project sanctioned by the BMC. I had taken a ‘point of order’ in the works committee of the BMC. This project will definitely solve the water crisis of the residents.”
A resident who attended the inaugural ceremony said, “Other than our present councillor Phaterpekar, not a single elected representative had bothered to solve our water problems with the help of municipal authorities. But now we feel our water woes will end soon.”
“Six-inch pipelines will pass through Anna Purna Building of Siddharth Colony and from there on residents will get two-inch pipelines inside their houses. Groups of five residents will get separate water meters,” said Pradeep Patole, an aide of the councillor.
The honours of the coconut breaking ritual for the inauguration were done by Bhau Korgaunkar, Vibhag Pramukh No 4 of Shiv Sena and supported by the local women folk of the area.
